Mauritius has the Data Protection Act 2017, closely modelled on the GDPR and among the strongest privacy statutes in Africa. That reputation was tested in 2021 when a proposed ICT Act amendment would have required decryption and inspection of social-media traffic through a national proxy — a plan that drew heavy criticism from technologists and civil society. Encryption remains the practical safeguard for Mauritian users.
