Tanzania passed a Personal Data Protection Act in 2022, a meaningful step forward, but it follows years of restrictive rules: the Online Content Regulations required bloggers and streamers to register and pay substantial fees, several outlets were suspended, and social media was blocked around the 2020 election. Vodacom, Airtel and Halotel operate under broad lawful-access obligations. Encryption remains a practical safeguard.
