Sudan has one of the world's worst records on internet shutdowns. The June 2019 blackout during the crackdown on protesters lasted weeks, and since the outbreak of war in April 2023 the country has suffered near-total nationwide outages lasting months as infrastructure was destroyed or seized and operators including Zain, MTN and Sudani were forced offline. Circumventing filtering and reaching services abroad has become an essential capability for Sudanese users.
